When we lived in Queen Creek, we used to make fun of the rednecks in Apache Junction. (No offense intended to anyone from A.J.) I think it all started with Jeff seeing someone driving down A.J. Main Street with a duck in their car. I wonder now if that is what I have become? Last Saturday, Cassidy and I were going down Main Street riding in the bed of our truck with our new goat and her baby. I was too afraid she would jump out if I did not sit back there and hold her. At one point Cassidy said "look Mom they are pointing at us". I really don't know if the passengers riding in the car next to us were looking at the cute goats or at Cassidy and I windblown, dirty and holding onto goats. Anyway, the trip was well worth it and we now have two cute goats here on the "farm". Meet Peanut and Almond.
We spent the day working on a goat pen and chicken coup. The intended area for the pen was just outside our garden area.
Some Friends gave us a playhouse they were not using anymore, so we made it into the roosting area for the chickens. It was super heavy and we could only move it with our tractor. It took a little maneuvering, but we finally got it in place. It also doubles as one side of the goat shelter.
Harrison and Cassidy went right to work fixing and cleaning. Most of the shingles had blown off in our last windstorm and several of the siding pieces had broken while we were moving it. So, we let Harrison do all the "fixing".
He worked really hard, hammering away. I was so proud of him!
The shingles turned out a little crooked, but I don't think the chickens mind too much. Meanwhile we stretched chicken wire around the coup and goat pen.
This is a picture of the chicks one short week ago. It still amazes me how fast they are growing.
Next came the moment of truth. The kids loaded up the chicks and moved them from their home in the garage out into the big wide world.
And....one by one they were carefully placed into their new home.
Once they were settled, the kids were off to do a few more chores. They sure make great farmers. :)
For you Mom, this is the view from the second story window.
We had to make a few modifications to the goat pen because Peanut is pretty smart at finding ways to get out. But it seems to be working now. It sure was a fun way to spend a Saturday!
